July 23, 2013 - At approximately 6:30 am, Dane County Sheriff’s deputies, along with fire departments from Columbus, Marshall, Sun Prairie, Cottage Grove, Deerfield, Deforest, Fall River, and Portland/Waterloo/Milford/Shields, responded to a shed fire at 7663 Highway 73 in the town of York.
A passerby called 911, and when emergency responders arrived they found a storage shed containing two skid loaders and some hay engulfed in flames. Due to the wind, the flames reached another nearby barn occupied by cattle. The cattle were all evacuated safely and there were no injuries.
Investigators believe one of the skid loaders may have started the hay on fire; however the incident is still under investigation. Damage has been estimated at $400,00. Highway 73 re-opened to traffic after 10:00 a.m.
