Insurance Companies in Wisconsin Exchange Released

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Thirteen insurance companies across Wisconsin have cleared the first hurdle to participate in the new federally run insurance exchange established under President Barack Obama's federal health care overhaul.

Wisconsin's insurance commissioner's office on Tuesday released the list of providers that met state standards to participate. They must still complete a federal review and sign a contract before they can participate in the exchange, which is fully operational in January.

The insurance commissioner's office did not release rate information or coverage area details.

In addition to the 13 companies intended to offer individual insurance, nine cleared the state review to sell insurance to small business owners.

The exchange will offer small businesses, individuals and their families a choice of private health plans with subsidies for low-income consumers.
