Lake Mendota Drowning Victim Identified

08/22/2013 UPDATE - 4:30 PM -

MADISON, Wis.--- The Dane County Medical Examiner has identified Wednesday's drowning victim as UW-Madison student Richard De La Cruz.

De La Cruz, age 20, was swimming with friends Wednesday afternoon in Lake Mendota near the Porter Boat House. De La Cruz separated from his friends and did not resurface.

UW-Madison released a statement late Thursday afternoon on the drowning. The statement said De La Cruz was from Wauwatosa who transferred to UW from Marquette.

The schools says the University Health Services Counseling and Consultation Services is offering help to any students who need counseling. The number is 608-265-5600

08/22/2013 UPDATE:

Rescue crews pulled the body of the missing swimmer from Lake Mendota around 6:45 p.m. Wendesday night.

The Dane Co. Sheriff's Office says the man was found in 15 feet of water, just past the docks of the UW Boathouse.

No name has yet been released.

Fire crews are searching for a missing swimmer on Lake Mendota near the UW-Madison campus.

UW police say the call came in around 3:30 this afternoon.There was a group of people swimming 30-50 yards from the docks near the UW Rowing Team boathouse.

One of the members of the group noticed a woman in the group went under and didn't come back up. They called 911 and emergency crews responded.

Dane County has its sonar boat assisting in the search. At this time it is still considered a rescue operation.
