A new bandit on Madison’s crime beat...the “pepper-spray” bandits. Police spokesman Joel DeSpain says the cases all involve two suspects, armed with guns and some sort of mace.

The most recent was at Topper's Pizza on Mineral Point Rd on Tuesday night. Witnesses in that incident described the chemical as a bear mace. It was used during that robbery, but DeSpain says the irritant was used in the two other cases.

Witness descriptions have differed, but DeSpain says it can happen when dealing with witnesses who are pretty shaken up.
