MADISON, Wis. --- Former bishop Bruce Burnside has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for driving drunk and hitting and killing a jogger.

A plea deal in May meant Burnside was guilty of 2nd degree reckless homicide and first offense OWI.

In April 2013 he hit and killed Maureen Mengelt while she was on a run in Sun Prairie.

Burnside will also have five years extended supervision when he is out of prison.

Former Bishop Bruce Burnside has been convicted of second degree reckless homicide and first offense OWI in the death of 52-year-old Maureen Mengelt.

Burnside pleaded guilty to the charges Tuesday during a plea hearing. The judge revoked his bail and sent Burnside to jail until sentencing.

The state is seeking an eight year sentence.

Burnside hit and killed Mengelt while she was jogging in Sun Prairie in April of 2013.

Last week, Mengelt's husband said he was unhappy with the plea deal. Burnside's attorney said this provides closure, and prevents any future appeals.
