The Madison Water Utility is considering a cap on large increases in water rates.

Following a 22-percent increase in rates planned for this next year, the utility's board is proposing a possible 12-percent cap for future hikes on water for city residents.

The last water rate from the utility was in early 2012, when bills went up 9-percent.

This latest 22-percent proposal still needs approval from the Public Service Commission.  If okayed, rates would go up in August of 2014. It would also raise rates a total of 75-percent since 2006.
