Wis. officials pull back on holiday deer hunts

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) _ State officials have backed off on plans to hold a gun deer hunt from Christmas to early January in the southern two-thirds of the state.

The recent decision was welcome news to local officials, who'd been fielding concerns from residents who wanted those days safe for outdoor recreational activities.

The proposal would have opened the southern part of the state to a holiday hunt from Christmas Eve to the Sunday after New Year's Day.

But a number of counties in central Wisconsin pushed back. They said the holiday period was popular for snowmobilers and other fans of the outdoors. Eau Claire County Parks and Forest director Josh Pederson says residents didn't want hunting to conflict with skiing, snowshoeing and other activities.
