Science Says “Tickling” Ear Therapy Could Slow Aging

A new study suggests that “tickling” the ear with a small electrical current could slow down some of the effects of aging. Researchers with the University of Leeds in the U.K. found a daily therapy called transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation led to improvements including better mood, sleep, and quality of life.

The study’s authors say the painless “tickle” therapy has potential long-term benefits for aging because it can recalibrate the body’s internal control system, called the autonomic nervous system. “The ear is like a gateway through which we can tinker with the body’s metabolic balance, without the need for medication or invasive procedures,” explains lead researcher Dr. Beatrice Bretherton. “We believe these results are just the tip of the iceberg.”
