JIMI HENDRIX: Trailer for Lady Doc Out

The first trailer for Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision is up on YouTube. The film will open at the Quad Cinema in New York City on August 9th as the start of worldwide release. It focuses on the creation of the studio that has been the birthplace of dozens of classic albums.

The trailer includes interviews with Hendrix’s longtime engineer Eddie Kramer, who helped design and build the studio; Steve Winwood, who played with Hendrix on the first night of recording at the new studio; and Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox.

Rolling Stones Debut Two New Songs At Levi's Stadium

The Rolling Stones are nearly done with their 'Hackney Diamonds' tour - but they're still adding new songs to the setlist. The band played not one, but *two* tour debuts at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Wednesday: "Far Away Eyes" and the Hackney Diamonds track "Bite My Head Off". They also busted out a cover of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone". The tour wraps up this Sunday in Ridgedale, MO.

GRATEFUL DEAD, BONNIE RAITT: Kennedy Center Honorees

The Grateful Dead, Bonnie Raitt, and Francis Ford Coppola are among the recipients of the 47th annual Kennedy Center Honors. The Kennedy Center said that "a social and cultural phenomenon since 1965, the Grateful Dead’s music has never stopped being a true American original, while inspiring a fan culture like no other," and that Raitt has "made us love her again and again with her inimitable voice, slide guitar, and endless musical range encompassing blues, R&B, country rock, and folk."

The four living members of the Dead -- Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bobby Weir -- issued a statement that said, "To be recognized alongside the artists who have in the past received this honor is beyond humbling. The Grateful Dead has always been about community, creativity, and exploration in music and presentation. We've always felt that the music we make embodies and imparts something beyond the notes and phrases being played—and that is something we are privileged to share with all who are drawn to what we do—so it also must be said that our music belongs as much to our fans, the Dead Heads, as it does to us. This honor, then, is as much theirs as ours."

Raitt issued her own statement that said, "I am deeply honored and thrilled to have been chosen to receive one of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. I have long been an admirer of the Awards and have been so blessed to be able to participate in several shows honoring others. There is no higher level of esteem nor as delightful a celebration and I want to extend my sincere thanks to all who have chosen me to receive this honor. I look forward to the upcoming ceremony and festivities, which I know will be one of my life’s peak experiences.”

The Dead and Raitt will be honored in Washington, D.C. on December 8th alongside their fellow honorees, director and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer Arturo Sandoval. New York's Apollo Theater will receive a special honors as an iconic American institution. The show will air on CBS December 23rd.

RUSH: Solo Reissues

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush only recorded one solo album each -- Victor from Lifeson in 1996, and Geddy followed that with My Favourite Headache in 2000. Both albums are now being re-released next month in various formats, including a range of vinyl configurations.

Starting with Lifeson's Victor, it's been completely remixed by Lifeson and will be available on vinyl for the first time. The fourth side of the album includes four instrumental tracks previously exclusive to his website. To make this release extra special, Lifeson will autograph 1,000 lithographs to be included with the ruby translucent two-LP set, which are available only through the Rush Backstage web store. Victor will be also be available in blue translucent vinyl in Canada only, crystal clear translucent in the U.S. and the rest of the world, black vinyl everywhere, as well as CD and digitally.

For Geddy's My Favourite Headache, this reissue marks its first vinyl pressing since a limited-edition Record Store Day exclusive in 2019. And, like Lifeson's Victor, the fourth side contains two unreleased instrumental mixes. You can get this album on green and blue vinyl in the U.S. and the rest of the world, blue/green galaxy in Canada, and CD and digitally. Both albums, which will be released on August 9th, were recorded while Rush was on hiatus following the death of Neil Peart's daughter and wife.

GEDDY LEE: Moving Memories

This past Tuesday, Geddy Lee of Rush parted with more of his baseball memorabilia at an auction in Arlington, Texas held in conjunction with Major League Baseball's All-Star Game that night in the Dallas suburb.

66 of the 81 lots were sold for a total of $180,168, with the big seller being one of two baseballs signed by President John F. Kennedy. It went for $45,000, but the other one, which had a high bid of $70,000, failed to sell. (In December, his other ball signed by Kennedy went for $138,600, and one signed by Kennedy and his Vice President, Lyndon Johnson, sold for $170,100.) And another signed by President Herbert Hoover on April 17th, 1929 sold Tuesday for $10,000. Geddy said “Strangely enough it was a little easier for me to part with the Presidential balls because I'm a Canadian. So, I felt in some way [they] should be in the hands of an American collector, you know. It's really more apropos there." The other big seller Tuesday was the final out ball from Game Seven of the 1982 World Series won by the St. Louis Cardinals. It was signed by Cardinals relief pitcher Bruce Sutter who recorded the out.

We spoke to Geddy on Tuesday morning, just before the auction, and he told us he decided to start parting with some items because he hadn't added anything to his collection in quite a number of years. "I realized that the collection was sort of stagnant, and I don't think that's the point of a collection just to horde a bunch of things locked away. And, as I started to go through my inventory, I realized how much stuff I had that I wasn't even able to display in my office. It was all in boxes."

And as for deciding what to sell and what to keep, he said it comes down to "anything that had personal significance to [him]." "Anything that was gifted to me from a ballplayer. Anything that was part of my history as a [Toronto] Blue Jay fan, and before that an [Montreal] Expos fan, those are things that were untouchable. Any of my little quirkier things that I love -- I love stories of unusual moments in the game. Those are things I just really didn't want to part with. So, I separated the emotional connection."

You can learn more about his obsession in a new book he’s written, 72 Stories from the Collection of Geddy Lee. Those who bought items in this week's auction will get a copy, but he tells us he plans to publish it soon.

GREEN DAY, GOO GOO DOLLS, HUEY LEWIS: Soundtrack Daredevil & Wolverine

Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Huey Lewis and the News and NSYNC appear on the soundtrack to the upcoming Marvel film Daredevil & Wolverine. Considering the style of the previous two Daredevil films, most of thsese songs will likely be used for comic effect. The track list includes Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris," "Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," Huey Lewis and the News "The Power of Love," NSYNC's "Bye, Bye Bye," Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta's Grease duet "You’re The One That I Want," Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You" and "The Lady In Red" by Chris de Burgh.

The album also has a song sung by co-star Hugh Jackman from one of his musicals -- "The Greatest Show" from The Greatest Showman. The vinyl version of the soundtrack is out Wednesday, with the streaming version out next Friday when the movie hits theaters.

Chili Peppers Announce Park Collab

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are working on a collaboration with the lifestyle brand Parks Project. The collection includes a T-shirt, sweatshirt and blanket with designs inspired by Yosemite National Park and the band’s 1999 album, “Californication,” which turned 25 in June.

Proceeds will support the organization NatureBridge, which aims to “connect young people to the wonder and science of the natural world.”

Parks Project President Jack Gray says, “We are incredibly excited to partner with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on this special collection. The designs, inspired by the stunning landscapes of Yosemite and the band’s boundary-pushing artistic style, perfectly align with our mission to promote conservation and inspire a love for the outdoors. Together, we hope to make a significant impact by supporting NatureBridge and providing opportunities for kids to connect with nature and learn about the importance of preserving our national parks.” The collection will go on sale July 22 at ParksProject.us.

How Taylor Hawkins’ Death Made Dave Navarro’s Health Battle Worse

Musician Dave Navarro is opening up about his struggles with long Covid and the pain of losing friend and bandmate Taylor Hawkins. Talking with Guitar World, Navarro shared that his band — NHC — with Hawkins and Chris Chaney had music ready when things began to take a turn.

“I’d just completed making a record with Taylor Hawkins and Chris Chaney,” Navarro said. “We mixed and mastered it – and then we lost Taylor. That was in the middle of Covid, and it was actually very painful for me to pick up the guitar after that. … I didn’t pick up the guitar for about a year.”

He said, “For the first year after losing Taylor, I didn’t play. …Then, about a year into it, I picked up the guitar, started playing some cover songs, and just kind of got used to the instrument in my hand again.” There are no announced plans to release NHC's album.

DONALD FAGEN: Steely Leader is Reelin'

Steely Dan's Donald Fagen isn't pleased that country band Sixwire performed Steely's 1972 song "Reelin' in the Years" at Monday's opening of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. He released a short statement saying, "Hey! Sixwire: If you want to play our music, how about playing 'Tin Foil Hat'?"

He's referring to Todd Rundgren's 2017 song, which he collaborated on about then President Trump. It includes the lyrics: "The man in the tin foil hat is tweeting like a teenage girl” and “He is writing checks to his accusers with those tiny little hands.” Rundgren says they wrote it because they were tired of Trump being "a little whiny man because he didn't win the popular vote" against Hillary Clinton when he was elected in 2016. Todd said "I had this orphan track that I was probably gonna leave off the record. I didn't know how to finish it. And I asked him, 'Would you like to listen to it and maybe, you know, we'll put something together.' He listened to it and he started sending me titles, one of which was 'Tin Foil Hat.' And we had a couple of writing sessions and then I went over to his house and recorded the vocals and some piano playing from him."

Kyle Gass Removes Apology

Tenacious D member Kyle Gass has removed his apology for his controversial Donald Trump comment on Instagram. Gass faced widespread backlash this week over a controversial comment made at the band’s recent Sydney concert. The comment was made after Black brought a birthday cake onstage and asked Gass, who was celebrating his 64th birthday, to make a wish. Gass’ then replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time."

After Gass was widely criticized, the musician and actor shared a statement apologizing for his comment, calling it “highly inappropriate, dangerous, and a terrible mistake.”

It’s unclear as to why Gass has removed his apology post.

ZZ Top Bassist Regrets Getting 17-String Bass

ZZ Top bassist Elwood Francis has some regrets - most notably, convincing Billy Gibbons to buy a 17-string bass. The massive, over-the-top instrument has become a staple of ZZ Top's live show - though Francis wishes it wasn't. He told Guitar World he "found it late at night while internet surfing" and told Gibbons "We should order one of these, and I'll play it. It'll be hilarious." Unfortunately, the bass is extremely difficult to play. Even more unfortunately, it's become a viral hit, meaning Francis has to play it every single night, even though he "hates" it.

He admits "At this point, more people ask me about the 17-string bass than they do the fuzzy guitar."

The Foos are back at CitiField Friday night.

TODAY IS NATIONAL DAIQUIRI DAY

July 19th is National Daiquiri Day! The daiquiri is a rum-based cocktail invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox. Legend has it that Cox created the first daiquiri in the early 1900s after he ran out of gin at a small bar in Santiago, Cuba. The original daiquiri recipe called for white rum, lime juice, and sugar. According to another legend, Ernest Hemingway inspired the creation of the frozen variety at El Floridita in Havana in the 1940s. The bartender’s name was Constantino Ribalaigua and he is often considered the true creator of the daiquiri. Today, there are dozens of daiquiri flavors and varieties!

EXPERT-BACKED HABITS TO KEEP YOUR BRAIN HEALTHY

Making small tweaks to your daily routine can help you prevent cognitive issues, like dementia, as we get older. Our brains are essential for our ability to function, but they don’t get a lot of attention or TLC, like muscles, our skin and teeth do. Think of brain care the way we wear sunscreen to protect our skin, taking care of it sooner rather than later is the best way to keep it functioning at its best.

Brain care “is going to help your heart, protect you from other diseases, make you more connected to other people and more upbeat,” explains Dr. Gary Small, a geriatric psychiatrist. “You’re going to live longer and better. Who doesn’t want that?”

These are the habits and lifestyle changes experts recommend adding to your routine to keep your brain healthy.

·Taking Walks With A Friend - Getting regular physical exercise is one of the best things you can do for brain health. But you don’t have to run a marathon to see results, research shows that older adults who frequently take “leisure walks” are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than those who don’t. And Dr. Small says bringing a friend to talk with while walking adds a social connection and mental stimulation to the exercise that’s a strong brain-booster.

·Meditating For 10 Minutes - Just 10 minutes of meditation can improve mood, lower stress and improve cognitive function. Consistency is key, so try to make it a daily habit.

·Gratitude Journaling - Negative thinking isn’t just bad for your mood, it’s bad for your brain, too. But getting in the habit of looking for the silver lining by practicing gratitude can lower the risk of dementia and cognitive decline, and writing by hand also helps to keep your brain sharp.

·Keeping A Consistent Bedtime - Sleep is crucial to brain function and research shows that getting even one hour less than the recommended amount of sleep every night raises the risk of dementia. Going to bed every night at the same time and getting at least seven hours of sleep helps combat that.

·Picking Up A New Team Sport - This also promotes healthy brain function, because you’re learning something new, being active and socially engaged. It can be anything from joining a yoga studio to learning to play pickleball, as long as it stimulates your mind, gets you moving and talking with people, it’s good for your brain.

SURVEY REVEALS HOW LITTLE COLLEGE STUDENTS KNOW ABOUT HOW GOV’T WORKS

This fall, many college students will get to vote in their first election, but new research suggests they may want to brush up their knowledge first. A new survey from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni finds a lot of undergraduate college students don’t know much about how our government works or American history.

The poll of 3,026 undergrads asked 35 questions and the results show:

·Less than a third (31%) know that James Madison is the “Father of the Constitution.”

·Six in 10 students couldn’t correctly identify the term lengths of members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

·Only 27% know that Vice President Kamala Harris is the President of the U.S. Senate, 28% thought it was President Biden.

·Just 35% know that Mike Johnson is the current speaker of the House of Representatives.

·Students are also unsure about who the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is. Only 37% know it’s John Roberts, and 16% said it was Clarence Thomas.

·Just 28% know that the 13th Amendment is the government action that freed the slaves.

·Less than a third (32%) know that the legislative branch of the government has the power to declare war.

·Despite the fact there were recently two presidential impeachment trials, just 32% know that an impeachment trial happens before the U.S. Senate, 30% mistakenly thought it takes place before the Supreme Court.

·Only a quarter of college students know that the Constitution doesn’t specify the number of justices on the Supreme Court, a third incorrectly said that it requires nine.

THIS NEW LIP GLOSS TUBE CAN DETECT ROOFIES

A new product on the market is designed to help women stay safe, and it comes in a surprising package - lip gloss. Esōes [[SOS]] Cosmetics has created an innovative lip gloss tube that can detect date rape drugs and even call for help in an emergency. The $65 product comes with testing strips that can identify if roofies are in a drink, and it sounds like a game-changer.

“We provide a real way to detect and confirm the presence of common date rape drugs in drinks and call for help immediately before a person becomes unconscious,” explains Esōes founder and CEO Joy Hoover. “By giving people the power to test their drinks and call for help with just a push of a button, we raise awareness, encourage reporting, and ultimately, cut down on drink spiking incidents.”

So how does it work?

·At the bottom of the lip gloss tube is a hidden compartment that holds the testing strips.

·When one is dipped in a drink, if it shows two lines, the drink is safe, but only one line means drugs are in it.

·According to the company, the testing strips can detect drugs including rohypnol [[ruh-HIP-naal]] or “roofies,” Xanax, Valium, Ativan and others.

CONNECTICUT MAN MAKES SOAP FROM HIS OWN BODY FAT

A Connecticut man is being compared to Brad Pitt’s character in “Fight Club,” but not for his fighting skills. Robert Tolppi is catching a lot of attention because he’s made soap from his own body fat, posting a video on TikTok showing off the entire process. “Some find the video funny, while others find it outright disgusting,” the 23-year-old told Caters News Agency.

He's built a following of 1.5-million on TikTok by sharing weird clips, and this one is no exception. He didn’t remove his own fat, though; he had 400ccs of fat removed from his body with liposuction, then asked if he could keep it. “I found the idea of human fat soap compelling, taking the conclusions of the zero-waste movement and our society’s push to recycle to the next level,” he said. It takes all kinds.

Ric Flair Not At All Happy About Not Being On ESPN’S Top 100 List

Whooo! Ric Flair seems to be pissed about being left off ESPN’s list of the Top 100 Athletes of the 21st Century. In his rant, posted on X, Flair is quick to point out his “16 world titles…actually 22…, 1,200 hour matches, 15 years without a day off, (status as a) cultural icon and worldwide sensation.” Flair also added that “so many people have lost sight of what greatness truly is.” While there’s no denying the work, skill, and athleticism that goes with being a professional wrestler, particularly one of Flair’s caliber, it should be noted that:

·None of those wrestling titles happened in the 21st century

·Flair retired from wrestling in 2008…and 2012…and 2022

·It’s debatable how much of a “real sport” wrestling is

All of that said, if there was a Mt. Rushmore of professional wrestling, Ric Flair would unquestionably be on it.
