BILLY JOEL: New York City State of Finality

Billy Joel will bring his one-show-a-month residency at New York's Madison Square Garden, which started in January 2014, to an end today. The final show raises his overall total of Garden performances to 150, and 116th in the residency. "I’m kind of flabbergasted that it did last as long as it did. My team tells me that we could continue to sell tickets, but 10 years, 150 shows – alright already! Seems like a nice number." Joel says ending the residency will free him up to play other venues in and around New York City. “We can play stadiums. Yankee Stadium, Giants Stadium, Citi Field, where the Mets play, so there’s plenty of that lined up. I’m not going to stop doing shows. That’s what I do. We have a whole schedule laid out into 2025, where we’re going to be playing.”

And, despite turning 75 in May, he has no plans to retire. “What else am I going to do? Stop doing shows and sit around, and watch TV, and turn into a vegetable? No. I don’t want to do that."

Throughout the course of his MSG run, Joel has sold more than 1.6 million tickets, and was joined by numerous special guests — including Steve Miller, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Brian Johnson, Tony Bennett, Paul Simon, Billy Gibbons, Elvis Costello, and Foreigner's Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, who he inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

Joel, who has performed at the venue more than any other artist, played first show there on December 14th, 1978 in support of his fifth album, The Stranger. In 2006 he did 12 consecutive shows there, which set the venue’s record for “most consecutive performances by any artist.”

To commemorate the historic moment, a banner stating “Joel – 12” was raised to the Garden’s rafters, making him the first entertainer to join the city’s Knicks and Rangers NBA and NHL franchises.

ROLLING STONES: More Tour Stats

Mick Jagger Shares Tribute to John Mayall

Mick Jagger was among the many British rock giants to pay tribute to John Mayall, who died on July 22 at age 90. Jagger wrote via Instagram, “So sad to hear of John Mayall’s passing. He was a great pioneer of British blues and had a wonderful eye for talented young musicians, including Mick Taylor - who he recommended to me after Brian Jones died - ushering in a new era for the Stones.” Mayall had a knack for spotting up-and-coming talent for his Bluesbreakers band. Among the musicians he recruited for his band who went on to start other bands are Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Jack Bruce, John McVie, and Aynsley Dunbar.

ERIC CLAPTON: Reacts to the Passing of His Mentor

Eric Clapton has lost many friends and colleagues over the years -- sometimes he'll make a brief comment; other times he'll post a short piece of original music; but most often, he'll mourn privately. But when it came to the death Tuesday of UK blues legend John Mayall, Clapton, who first j

posted a two-minute-plus video remembering his "mentor" and "surrogate father." "I want to say thank you chiefly for rescuing me from oblivion and God knows what when I was a young man around the age of 18, 19 when I decided that I was gonna quit music. He found me and took me into his home and asked me to join his band. And I stayed with him and I learned all that I really have to draw on today in terms of technique and desire to play the kind of music I love to play. I did all my research in his home -- in his record collection -- the Chicago blues that he was such an expert on."

Clapton goes onto say that while Mayall taught him all he really knows and "gave [him] the courage and enthusiasm to express [himself] without fear or without limit," he does have some regrets. "All I gave him in return was how much fun it was to drink and womanize when he was already a family man and I wish to make amends for that. I did that while he was alive. And I've obviously since learned that that is not the best way to carry on. But I shall miss him and I hope to see him on the other side."

While a member of Mayall's band, Clapton recorded the album Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton in three days. It was an artistic success and a consistent seller, and it pretty much launched the British blues craze. He left Mayall in July 1966 to form Cream, with another Mayall alum, bassist Jack Bruce, and Mayall replaced him with Peter Green who would eventually leave to form Fleetwood Mac. Bluesbreakers' drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie would soon leave Mayall to join the Mac.

Mayall will be honored with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Musical Influence Award in October.

The infamous festival took place July 22-25, 1999 at the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY, with headliners like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. But people don't remember Woodstock '99 for the music - they remember the near-riot that ended the festival, as disgruntled fans started destroying the sets and starting fires.

GUIDE TO GEN Z SLANG YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS ELECTION CYCLE

Not long after President Biden announced he was dropping his bid for reelection on Sunday, Charli XCX threw her support behind Vice President Kamala Harris. The pop star tweeted, “kamala IS Brat,” but it seems some folks didn’t understand what she meant. Harris’ presidential campaign got it and quickly embraced the support from the Gen Z crowd, adding references to Charli XCX’s “Brat” album to the Veep’s X account.

Now, to help clear up any confusion about the Gen Z slang, Voters of Tomorrow, a Gen Z-led organization that engages young Americans in politics (and clearly has a preference in candidates), has put together a guide to the Gen Z terms you’ll want to know this election cycle.

· Brat (noun): “An icon; an embrace of authenticity and confidence in oneself.” Example sentence: “Artist Charlie XCX posted that “kamala IS brat,” and Gen Z agrees.”

· Cap (noun): “A lie” Example sentence: “Everything said during that debate was cap.”

· Caught in 4k (adjective): “Found engaging in a criminal, immoral, or improper act with evidence to prove it.” Example sentence: “Trump was caught in 4k by the jury that convicted him of 34 felony counts.”

· Let them cook (verb): “To continue with the hope of succeeding, usually after revealing one’s potential” Example sentence: “Kamala Harris delivered for Gen Z as vice president; we should let her cook and elect her as president.”

· Lock in (verb): “To be focused, determined” Example sentence: “Voters of Tomorrow is locking in this election to contact young voters 20 million times.”

· Rizz (noun): “Exceptional skills at charming; charisma” Example sentence: “We know Vice President Harris has W rizz because she has helped pass monumental climate legislation through Congress.”

PARENTS WOULD MAKE $60K IF THEY GOT PAID FOR MENTAL LOAD WORK

Parents - do you feel like family management takes up all of your time? New research shows you’re right and reveals the numbers behind the parental mental load. Skylight and The Harris Poll teamed up for the Skylight Mental Load Report, which uncovers just how much time moms and dads spend on planning and coordinating family schedules and doing household tasks.

According to the poll of 2,005 parents of kids under 18, all that scheduling and planning takes up 30.4-hours a week. That’s almost a full-time job, of course, we don’t get paid for this work. But if we did, parents would be making $60-thousand for carrying that mental load - you know, it’s that never-ending list of things that need to be done and places the kids need to go. It’s so much to remember, it even takes up 63% of parents’ brain space.

The Mental Load Report also finds:

· More than three-quarters (79%) of parents say they’ve felt anxiety about scheduling family tasks.

· That may be because the average family is already overscheduled, with kids participating in an average of 11.5 activities a week, or 598 a year.

· To stay informed about all those activities, families get an average of 17.5 communications every week, which adds up to 912 per year.

· Carrying the mental load is taking a toll on parents’ relationships, too, as 61% report that it’s decreased their time with their partner.

· Almost half (47%) of parents admit they’ve had less or worse sex because of the stress of family scheduling.

· The thing is, most partnered parents feel they’re the one carrying the majority of the mental load. Primary caregivers say they carry 75% of it, while non-primary caregivers say they have 56% of it. That adds up to 131%, which shows there’s no limit to the mental load.

28% OF U.S. WORKERS PLAN TO QUIT THIS YEAR

So many Americans quit their jobs in 2021 and 2022 that it became known as the “Great Resignation.” At its peak, a record 4.5-million U.S. workers - about 3% of all employees in the country - were leaving their jobs in the spring of 2022. While that trend has slowed down a lot over the last two years, some experts speculate that another Great Resignation could be coming by the end of the year.

A new survey from ResumeBuilder.com suggests they may be right. It asks 1,000 full-time U.S. workers about if they’re thinking of leaving their jobs anytime soon and finds:

· Overall, 28% say they’re likely to quit this year, including 21% who are “somewhat” likely and 7% who are “highly likely” to quit.

· Gen Z and young millennials are more likely to leave their jobs than older respondents.

· In the 18-to 24-year-old age group, 37% say they’re likely to quit this year and 35% of 25-to 34-year-olds say the same.

· So why do so many people want a new job? The most common reasons people give for considering quitting are low pay (56%), desire for better benefits (44%) and overly-stressful work (43%).

· More than a third (35%) of all workers surveyed say they’d prefer a different work modality than what they have now.

· Among fully in-person workers, 40% would rather be hybrid (25%) or fully remote (15%).

· While 66% of those planning to quit this year are currently applying for new jobs, 32% plan to start soon, and 10% are frustrated enough with their current job that they’ll quit even if they don’t have their next job secured.

· The service/hospitality industry has the highest percentage of respondents who are likely to quit in 2024 with 35%, followed by the tech industry (34%) and finance industry (34%).

International Delight Releases “Home Alone”-Inspired Coffee Product Line

With temperatures in the triple-digits across a lot of the country, this week International Delight decided it was the perfect time to launch their new holiday-themed coffee products, inspired by the classic Christmas movie "Home Alone." The lineup includes flavors like peppermint mocha, frosted sugar cookie, and new additions like sugar-free peppermint mocha creamer and hot chocolate marshmallow creamer. These limited-edition products are available from now until December, and the company recommends getting them early because they’re anticipating them being popular. Although it may seem like I.D. is releasing these winter-appropriate flavors a little early, the company has a history of getting their holiday flavors out on shelves months before the actual season, as evidenced by the release of their fall flavors earlier this month.

Permed “Broccoli Cut” Hairstyle Is Trending For Teen Boys

Teen boys are flocking to hair salons to get perms for the viral “broccoli cut,” inspired by social media influencers and their peers. Referred to as a “broccoli, ice cream, or llama’s fur cut,” the trendy hairstyle features a head full of bouncy curls and has gained popularity among young men, including celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian’s son Mason Disick, and is even making it onto the big screen, being sported by actor David Corenswet in his role as Clark Kent in the upcoming “Superman” movie. Despite the high cost of getting a perm, the style's low maintenance and confidence-boosting effects are driving demand, although it’s become so popular that some NYC barber shops have stopped offering perms altogether.

FISH FALLS FROM SKY IN NEW JERSEY AND DAMAGES TESLA IN DRIVEWAY

A New Jersey couple's Tesla was damaged by a fish that seemingly fell from the sky outside their home. The car was parked in their driveway in Atlantic Highlands, NJ when the incident was caught on camera. Cynthia and Jeff Levine initially didn't realize what had happened. "The car started honking like crazy, which we had never heard before," Cynthia explained. "I went out and saw the damage, and it looked like fish scales and blood on the windshield."

They first thought someone had thrown the fish at their car. But, living about a mile from Raritan Bay, they figured a bird must have dropped it. "We have an eagle's nest in our backyard... We think it was probably the eagle," Cynthia added.

Expecting to get their Tesla back soon, Jeff joked, "I lowered my deductibles, so if any birds are listening, please don't drop anything here because I'm covered now."

TEXAS RAINS BRING OUT GIANT POISONOUS WORMS THAT REGENERATE WHEN CUT

Everything is bigger in Texas, including the creepy crawlers. Heavy rains around Houston are expected to bring out foot-long, poisonous hammerhead flatworms that regenerate if cut in half. These slimy invaders can cause skin irritation and are poisonous to pets if ingested.

Experts warn not to cut these worms, as they will regenerate. Instead, put on gloves, place them in a plastic bag with salt and vinegar or citrus oil, and freeze them overnight. Even dead, these worms are hazardous, so handle them with care.

Hammerhead flatworms get their name from their distinctive head shape and can grow up to 15 inches long. It gets worse, because these worms can reproduce asexually. A portion of the rear breaks off, grows a new head and becomes a new worm. Native to Asia, hammerhead worms have been reported across the US, including Texas, Alabama, and California.

WOMAN NEARLY MAULED TO DEATH BY A BEAR NARROWLY SURVIVES THANKS TO HER HAIR CLIP

A mom jogging in the Yukon was almost mauled to death by an eight-foot grizzly, but a hair clip saved her. Vanessa Chaput, 24, was running on a trail with her German Shepherd when they stumbled upon four bears. The male grizzly charged at her, mauling her back and breaking her arm. Vanessa played dead to survive, but the bear bit into her hair clip, which broke and hurt its mouth, causing it to momentarily release her head from its jaws. Vanessa then managed to get to the highway and call for help. She was rushed to the hospital with a broken arm, puncture wounds, and claw marks. After ten days in the hospital, she's back home and grateful to be alive. Vanessa hopes her story helps others know how to survive bear encounters: don’t scream, run, or make eye contact.

Nigerian Man Breaks World Record…For Twerking

Setting a new world record is something to be proud of…no matter how dumb it may seem to the rest of the world. In Nigeria, Babajide Israel Adebanjo is the official record holder for the “longest duration of twerking,” after he was able to continuously back dat azz up for three-hours and thirty-minutes. On a positive note, Adebanjo took on the challenge to “raise awareness about depression and the importance of mental health.” We can all now agree that twerking is a sure-fire cure for depression.

Celebrities Are Reportedly Swearing By Salmon Sperm Facial Treatments

It seems that a new facial skin treatment is becoming quite the rage among the Hollywood crowd. Celebrities are singing the praises of Salmon Sperm Facials. Among the stars who can’t get enough face-loads of salmon batter are Kim Kardashian, Sandra Bullock, Cate

Blanchett, and Jennifer Aniston. You’ll be relieved to learn that the facial process comes in the form of an injection of a “fine gel that’s taken from salmon’s DNA,” and these ladies aren’t getting it from the salmon the old-fashioned way.

Once More With Feeling – The Cops Have Social Media, Too

On Monday, Tara and James Lyles were arrested by Kentucky State Police and accused of drug trafficking. Authorities say that they’d “had their eyes” on the Lyles’ since February and that they were able to finally nab the pair thanks to their TikTok pages. Cops received a tip that the duo was running a “large-scale drug operation involving marijuana and THC products,” and they were allegedly posting “videos of the drug-making process” on their TikTok feed. An undercover purchase operation led to the eventual arrest, and 218-pounds of weed was reportedly seized from their warehouse, with a street value of approximately $440K. A bill has been signed legalizing medicinal cannabis in Kentucky starting in January of next year, but cannabis use outside of anything medicinal will remain illegal in the state.

Bride-To-Be Arrested For Domestic Battery After Prenuptial Dispute

In St. Petersburg, a Florida prenuptial agreement dispute reportedly turned violent and resulted in the domestic battery arrest of 26-year-old Molly Rose Hogan. Authorities say that on Sunday night, Hogan and the “male victim” were “involved in a pre-nuptials quarrel.” According to the victim, Hogan “grabbed him around the head, and struck him on the chest, torso, back, and legs, causing multiple physical injuries.” What caused the melee? The victim says the attack was prompted by “a heated argument over signing a prenuptial agreement prior to marriage.” Police say one witness, the victim’s brother, was bitten on the arm by Hogan as he tried to break it up. The exact nature of the dispute was not revealed, and we don’t know if the wedding, scheduled for Saturday, is still on. However, the wedding registry is reportedly still online for those wanting to give the loving couple a gift.

Man Wearing Lilo and Stitch Hat Wanted for Indecent Conduct

Authorities are seeking a man last seen wearing a blue Disney Lilo and Stitch bucket hat. He is suspected of multiple incidents of indecent conduct reported on Sunday, July 14, along the Sligo Creek Trail in Takoma Park, Maryland. The incidents occurred between 6:00 and 9:00 pm when three female joggers were approached by a young man behaving inappropriately. The joggers managed to scare off the suspect, who then fled along the trail. In response, the Maryland-National Capital Park Police have increased patrols in the area. The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 17 to 23 years old, wearing a white t-shirt and black and red basketball shorts, in addition to the Disney hat. The investigation is ongoing.

4 Californians Charged for Armed Robberies After Instagram Boasts

Four men in LA had a robbery routine: drive a blue BMW to a 7-Eleven or CVS, wear ski masks, pull a gun on the cashier, and demand cash or drugs, then post their loot on Instagram. One dude allegedly posted a pic of stolen cash with the caption, "Love my bros we go hit every time" and tagged “his bros” on the pic. Charles Christopher, Jordan Leonard, Tazjar Rouse, and D’Angelo Spencer were arrested on Tuesday and charged with armed robberies and other crimes. They targeted several stores, stealing $7,617 in cash and thousands in CVS pharmaceuticals over a seven week period. Rouse allegedly “advertised the stolen CVS medication for sale” on Instagram writing, “I got syrup,” on his photo's caption, referring to the stolen medication. Apparently, they missed the memo that crime doesn't pay, especially when you broadcast it online.

Breaching Whale Lands On Boat, Tosses Fishermen Into Water

Two fishermen say they’re lucky to be alive after a humpback whale flung itself onto their boat and knocked them into the water. The harrowing incident occurred Tuesday off the coast of New Hampshire, where Gregg Paquette and Ryland Kenney were fishing from their 23-foot boat. Although the pair had spotted the whale a few minutes earlier, Paquette says it was a good distance away. "We didn't see him for a couple of minutes, and then the next thing we knew, he popped up and landed right on the transom of the boat," the Groveland resident says. "Then all of a sudden, I look down, the boat is pitching up, the transom is going down into the water." The transom wasn’t the only thing to go into the water. Both men ended up in the Atlantic next to their capsized boat. Fortunately, brothers Wyatt and Colin Yager were fishing nearby and pulled the men out of the water. "It's kind of a miracle that I'm alive," Kenney says. "I don't know what was going through my head. Just, kind of, survival."

Man Hospitalized With Severe Burns After Walking In Death Valley Barefoot

A Belgium man has been hospitalized with severe burns on his feet after he reportedly lost his flip-flops while exploring the sand dunes in Death Valley National Park. The incident occurred over the weekend after the 42-year-old visitor stepped into soft sand at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes and lost his flip-flops below the surface, according to the National Park Service. Although it was 123 degrees Fahrenheit at the time, park officials say the ground temperature is always much higher than the air temperature. Because helicopters can’t land in intense heat, an ambulance transported the unidentified man to a higher elevation so a medical copter could take him to a hospital in Las Vegas, park officials say.

Lake Tahoe Sees Second-Highest Surface Temp In 25 Years

Lake Tahoe is getting warmer. One of America's most iconic lakes saw nearly record-breaking surface level temperatures this month. The Tahoe Environmental Research Center reports Lake Tahoe recorded its second-highest surface temperature in the last 25 years on July 22nd at 75-point-seven degrees. The highest was in July 2006 at nearly 78 degrees. While the warm water may be great for lake-goers, scientists say the higher temperature allows for the potential growth of harmful algae blooms and other invasive aquatic species.

Sharks Testing Positive For Cocaine

Sharks off the Brazilian coast are testing positive for cocaine. Biologists tested 13 Brazilian sharpnose sharks in the waters near Rio de Janeiro and found concentrations 100 times higher than previously found. It's not exactly clear how the sharks are coming in contact with cocaine, but theories include that it could be from labs where it's manufactured or the excrement of cocaine users. The findings were published this week in "Science of the Total Environment."

Canadian Soccer Coach And Analyst Kicked From Olympics With Spy Drone

The Paris Olympics haven’t started, and there’s already been a couple of casualties. The Canadian women’s soccer team will be without the services of their assistant coach and an analyst who have both been “kicked out of the Olympic squad.” Team New Zealand complained that their practice sessions were “disrupted by a drone flown by a staff member of its Group A opponents,” according to the Canadian Olympic Committee. Assistant coach Jasmine Mander and unaccredited analyst Joseph Lombardi have both been “sent home,” and head coach Bev Priestman has also “removed herself” from coaching during Canada’s match-up with New Zealand today.

Olympic Facts To Celebrate Tomorrow’s Kickoff

The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics is tomorrow. To get psyched for the ultimate athletic event, here are some fun facts:

· Paris and London are tied for hosting the most Olympics at three. Paris previously hosted in 1900 and 1924

· During the 2024 Opening Ceremony, athletes won’t parade through a stadium. Instead they’ll float down the Seine River in boats

· Billions of people will watch the games on TV

· There will be 329 events in the Paris Olympics

· There have been some unusual sports in the Olympics like events for painters and artists, tandem bicycle, tug-of-war, hot-air ballooning and a swimming obstacle race.

IOC CREATES OLYMPIC ESPORTS GAMES

A historic vote from the International Olympic Committee has made it so that you no longer have to be a world-class athlete to be an Olympian. As of yesterday, the Olympic Esports Games are now a thing. The IOC executive board has “created a framework” for what the video game version of the Olympics will look like. The vote was unanimously approved by the board, so now it just remains to be seen what Olympic-style gaming will end up looking like.

PARIS OLYMPICS PASSING OUT OVER 200K CONDOMS IN CUTE PACKAGES TO ATHLETES

As athletes arrive in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics, they’ll have a place to sleep and eat in the Olympic Village, and plenty of condoms, too. Videos of room tours are hitting social media, showing what every athlete gets in their room, including those infamous twin-size cardboard “anti-sex beds.” And while they may be intended to discourage Olympians from cuddling up together, there’s a supply of Olympic-branded condoms in every room to make sure the sex is safe.

According to Laurent Dalard, who’s coordinating first aid and health services at the Paris Games, the Olympic Village will have 200-thousand male condoms, 20-thousand female condoms and 10-thousand oral dams available. That’s 230-thousand contraceptives for the 10-thousand 500 athletes, or about 20 per person.

The condoms given to the athletes come in bright and colorful packages featuring images of the official mascots of the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics. They also come with little messages, like:

· “On the field of love, play fair. Ask for consent.”

· “Don’t share more than victory, protect yourself against STDs.”

· “Score a win: Yes to consent, no to STDs”

· And “No need to be a gold medalist to wear it!”

As for those beds, Inside the Games reports that sustainability is the main reason Olympic officials went with them, not to try to stop athletes from having sex. Both the cardboard bed frames and the polyethylene mattresses are 100% recyclable, but they can still handle some action. According to Brett Thornton, the U.S. Chief Operating Officer for Airweave, the company that makes the beds, the cardboard frames are “designed far sturdier than typical wooden bed frames.”

The World’s Six most Expensive Sports Trophies

Anyone who’s ever played any kind of sport has dreamed of becoming a champion and getting the opportunity to hoist that championship trophy into the air. The fact that those trophies come at a heavy price tag isn’t a shock, but you might be surprised to learn just how pricey the most expensive ones are.

· The Lombardi Trophy ($50K) – Created by Tiffany & Co., it’s made from around $10K in sterling silver and takes four months to produce

· The Stanley Cup ($650K) – Possibly the most iconic of all sports trophies, it’s made from silver and nickel, stands almost three feet tall, and weighs about 35-pounds. There are three versions of the Stanley Cup: the original and “Permanent Cup” are on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the Presentation Cup is the one the players lift, celebrate with, drink from, and eat cereal out of

· The FA Cup ($1.18 Million) – It’s awarded to the best soccer club in England and dates back to 1872. The original FA Cup was stolen and never recovered. New versions have appeared on multiple occasions, but the design has largely stayed the same. The FA Cup takes around 250 hours to create and is comprised of around 14-pounds of sterling silver

· The Indianapolis 500’s Borg-Warner Trophy ($3.5 Million) – Its permanent home is in the museum next to the Brickyard. The winner of the Indy 500 gets to “spend some time with it after the event,” but eventually has to settle for a replica. It’s over five feet tall, weighs more than 150-pounds, and cost $10K to create back in the 1930s

· The Preakness Stakes’ Woodlawn Vase ($4 Million) – It’s three feet tall, weighs around 30-pounds, and is also made from sterling silver. The original trophy is housed at the Baltimore Museum of Art, but it makes an appearance each year at the Preakness under the watch of the National Guard. Preakness-winning jockeys and horse owners receive replicas worth $15K and $40K respectively

· The FIFA World Cup ($20 Million) – The “Jules Rimet Trophy” was “in the shape of a cup and made of gold-plated sterling silver.” It was stolen while on display in England in 1966 but was recovered a week later. After that, FIFA opted to have a replica made for “whenever it was shown in public.” In 1983, it was stolen again, never recovered, and believed to have been “melted down for cash.” After the 1974 World Cup, a new trophy was commissioned, and FIFA “went big.” The 14-inch-tall trophy is made from “more than 13-pounds of 18-carat gold,” and experts estimate its value at around $20 million
